Mobile technology is already altering the way we learn. In many parts of the world today, a young child may grow up in a touchscreen reality. We can improve literacy through ease-of-use and engagement. Mobile facilitates collaboration in the classroom, and even students with learning disabilities are benefitting from this shift to a more involved, more cooperative learning environment.

For the past 3 years, Enrique Tamés Muñoz of the Tecnológico de Monterrey in Mexico City has been turning the smart phone into an indispensible classroom tool in both high schools and universities. What began as a pilot program with 6 students has now reached over 3000, and recently won the World Summit Award for Best Mobile Learning Model in Latin America. “When we gave them the phones, they started interacting. Working together, sharing, and most importantly discussing,” says Tamés. Mexico is currently working on implementing the program nationwide.

Transforming content from Finland’s leading elementary education sys- tem into a mobile application called Ympyra (Finnish for circle), Aape Pohjarvirta seeks to take mobile learning worldwide. “Look at Mexico. It works. Mobile has made learning so scalable, so fast. Do you want to be the reason for the future or an ex- cuse,” says Pohjarvirta. “Let’s make this dream real.”

This is the first time in the history of mankind that every single one of us could change our future if we knew how to do it. Aape Pohjarvirta
